An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 56" x 81" [142 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

Vittoria o Morte! (released in English-speaking countries as "Victory or Death"), the 1913 Mario Caserini Italian silent espionage spy adventure melodrama thriller (about a countess whose father had important secret documents, and a spy deceives her and steals them, and she spends the entire film pursuing him; in the most interesting sequence of the movie, she steals an early airplane to chase the spy who is on a ship; the movie featured special effects by Segundo de Chomon, and Nelson is noted for playing a "modern" woman, who is not afraid to be part of the action but will also use her feminine charms to achieve her goals) starring Berta Nelson. It is easy to find a complete summary of the movie, but we could not find any names of the rest of the cast. This almost certainly is one of the earliest non-documentary movies to include an airplane, especially in an important plot development. The movie has several important similarities to "Filibus", which was also made in Italy two years later, and we would think the makers of Filibus surely had seen this movie! If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Pier Luigi Caldanzano
Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this Italian movie! In May of 2018, we auctioned a four-panel Italian poster from this movie, and that poster (which had a completely different image from this poster) auctioned for $7,750! This two-panel poster has a wonderful colorful image of a ship at sea fully on fire and about to submerge! These two posters are the only two posters we have ever auctioned from this important early Italian movie. Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 56" x 81" [142 x 206 cm]. Also note that this Italian two-panel was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap. Finally, note that the theater that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is typical of many actual theater-used posters in multiple pieces).

Condition: good. The theater that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is typical of many actual theater-used posters in multiple pieces). The right blank border of the poster was completely trimmed off. There are many pinholes around the edges, with a few tears and some tiny paper loss, with some small tears and tiny paper loss on small parts of some folds. There are some faint brown stains and darkening on the back on the back of the folds that were on the outside when the poster was fully folded, and there are a few scattered in the poster. It seems remarkable that this poster has survived at all after 105 years, and after a relatively simple linenbacking, the poster will display wonderfully, and it will require little paint restoration anywhere in the image.
