An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

Libeled Lady, the 1936 Jack Conway romantic love triangle newspaper journalism comedy (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; an extremely complicated story of an heiress, played by Myrna Loy, who sues a newspaper for libel, and the editor, played by Tracy, is afraid he will lose, so he hires Powell to catch Loy in a compromising situation with the help of his girlfriend, played by Harlow, who will instead temporarily marry Powell to make the scheme work, but of course, Powell and Loy end up actually falling in love, and everything works out in the end) starring Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy, Walter Connolly, and Inez Palange (uncredited as the fortune teller). Can anyone imagine today's studios making a movie with so many top level stars? It is extremely rare to see three top stars in any movie, but this movie had four of the all-time greatest, and it is a thoroughly enjoyable movie!

Important Added Info: Note that there is something very unusual about this poster. It was found in New Zealand, and in England, Australia, and New Zealand, the movie was released as "Libelled Lady", with a second "l" in "Libeled", because that is how that word is spelled there. So the distributor in New Zealand had that title stenciled over the original title area with red and yellow paint. That kind of paint can't be easily removed from a poster, and even if it can be, the area underneath it is almost surely badly stained. Since the new stenciled title is spelled almost the same as the original, the person who had this very rare half-sheet restored had the restorer simply leave the stenciled title alone. One could have the original title painted over the stenciled title, but that seems silly to us, but of course, it will be the choice of the new owner of this poster!

Note that first release 1936 posters from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a one-sheet, two jumbo window cards and an insert (and NO other posters, only lobby cards and stills) from this movie until we received this half-sheet, which we have never auctioned before!

Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards.

Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we know it would definitely lessen its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. As described above, it had a the alternate spelling title stenciled over the original title. It also had some faint smudges and stains scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking, depending on how you value the title being stenciled over. The restorer touched up the faint smudges and stains, but left alone the stenciled title area. It will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall, but bear this unusual "defect" in mind before bidding on this extremely rare poster.
