Angels with Dirty Faces, the classic 1938 Michael Curtiz (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) romantic crime murder thriller melodrama (in this movie, quintessential tough guy Cagney is a hero to the Dead End Kids, and at the end his childhood pal, now a priest, asks him to be a coward as he is led to the electric chair to help keep those kids from following in his footsteps; "A story... mighty with the clash of men! A picture... unforgettable in its greatness!"; "Sensational in it's dramatic impact!"; "From a Story by Rowland Brown") starring James Cagney (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Rocky Sullivan), Pat O'Brien (as Father Jerry Connolly), The Dead End Kids (Leo Gorcey [as Bim], Billy Halop [as Soapy], Huntz Hall [as Crab], Bobby Jordan, Gabriel Dell, Bernard Punsly), Humphrey Bogart (as James Frazier), Ann Sheridan (as Laury Ferguson), George Bancroft, and Frankie Burke (as the young Rocky; he was an unknown 17 year-old newsboy when he was discovered to play the young James Cagney, because he had an uncanny resemblance to young James Cagney!)

Important Added Info: Note that 1938 first release posters from this movie are incredibly rare. We previously auctioned a three-sheet (in 25 years ago, for $12,650), a six-sheet (25 years ago, for $13,800), a jumbo window card (23 years ago, for $2,875), and a window card (19 years ago, for $1,628), but NO other first release movie posters in the last 19 years, until we were consigned this one-sheet, which we have never before auctioned!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had a second vertical fold 1/4" to the left of the regular one, with many small tears between the two folds, and a few tiny areas of paper loss. It had some small tears and paper loss in the bottom horizontal fold and a lesser amount of wear on the other two folds. It had a small tear in Halop's ear at upper right and a vertical tear running down his cheek by the edge of his mouth and into Hall's hair beneath his face. It had pinholes and tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone many years ago linenbacked the poster with minimal restoration and no excess linen around the edges. If I owned this poster, I would surely have it removed from the old linen and re-backed. The colors are good, and the defects are primarily in the vertical fold and in the borders, and after re-backing by a top professional, the poster will display really well, and mostly only need paint restoration in those exact areas.
