An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Six-Sheet Movie Poster (6sh; measures 81" x 81" [206 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

Belle of the Nineties (some movie paper was prepared with the working title "It Ain't No Sin"), the 1934 Leo McCarey riverboat entertainer romantic comedy ( "Mae West.... in the picture the whole country is talking about"; about a sexy cabaret entertainer who has a tough boxer boyfriend, but who attracts the attention of every man who sees her) starring Mae West, Roger Pryor, Johnny Mack Brown, Katherine DeMille, John Miljan, Libby Taylor, and Duke Ellington's Orchestra. Note that the movie's working title was "It Ain't No Sin", but the censors refused to allow it, and it was changed, even though some posters exist with that title. They tried to change the title to "St. Louis Woman", but the residents of that city protested, and their next title was "Belle of New Orleans", but they received similar protests, and they settled on the non-controversial "Belle of the Nineties"!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this six-sheet, and it seems quite likely that no examples of it exist! There are some real oddities to this poster. As noted above, the working title was "It Ain't No Sin", and it appears that this six-sheet was originally created with that title, because it has that title in tiny letters at the bottom of the sections. Apparently, after the title was changed, perhaps the studio was too cheap to print all new six-sheets, and instead solely printed a new section with the new title, to replace the section with the old title. NOT ALL OF THIS POSTER IS PRESENT! However, almost all of the image is present, and what is missing is mostly the two pieces at top left and top right that read "MAE" and "WEST" (we know this because we have an image of the six-sheet with the original title from the pressbook, which we have reproduced here in black and white). What is also missing is all the small credits from the bottom of the poster (again, see the pressbook image to see exactly what is missing). So one could take this poster and have a restorer recreate the top left and top right sections, and they could also either choose to recreate the bottom credits, or not. Either way, they would have an amazing poster that would be mostly original. Note that there are also two pieces that do not go to this poster, but which surely belong to a different example of this poster that solely had the orange background area, plus white border. One measures 14" x 44" and one measures 19 1/2" x 33 1/4". These could come in very handy for the restorer recreating the top left and top right, because they could use portions of those pieces to replace the missing background and white border around the words "MAE" and "WEST". Obviously, there is a lot to digest here, so please read all of the above very carefully and look at our images before bidding on this likely one of a kind poster!

Condition: fair. As noted above, much of the poster is present except for Mae West's credit at top left and right, and all the small credits at bottom. A talented restorer can absolutely recreate what is missing, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding on this poster!
