A Linenbacked German Special Poster (measures 32 1/2" x 48" [83 x 122 cm]) (Learn More)

Kathi Kobus Kunstlerfest (literally translates to "Kathi Kobus Art Festival"), the 1930s German poster promoting an artist's carnival ball/festival which took place at Die Blute on February 4th and was sponsored by Kathi Kobus. Kobus was a Munich restaurateur who founded Simplicissimus, a restaurant and bar frequented by many artists and writers. Note that this poster features artwork of a painter completing a portrait of a smiling woman in a top hat. Munich (the Bavarian capital) used to be a carnival stronghold from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century until well into the 1930s, and it is in fact alive and kicking today. In 1914 alone, there were 533 masked balls and 145 black and white balls. This phenomenon of decadent hustle and bustle was created in particular by the artists of the Schwabinger Boheme, at first in the form of wild studio festivals, but increasingly also by artists' balls.
Artist: Otter (spelling?)
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was folded across the middle and had minor wear on that fold. It had staining in the right blank border and small stains in the other borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
