An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

West of Shanghai (also released as "Cornered"), the 1937 John Farrow Asian China adventure suspense thriller (based on the play by Porter Emerson Browne; about an Asian warlord who holds oil men and missionaries hostage in a remote Asian outpost) starring Boris Karloff (in yellowface!), Beverly Roberts, Ricardo Cortez, Gordon Oliver, Sheila Bromley, and Richard Loo. Note that the original play took place in Mexico, but because of increasing interest in the Far East, the location was changed to China! Note that, as was common in early Hollywood, non-Asian actors were hired to play Asians, and they did this through the use of "yellowface" makeup (similar to "blackface" makeup that had been used for so long). Often, this was in movies that featured "interracial romances" between Asians and westerners, but in this case, it was so that they could have a "big name" play the Asian villain! Thankfully, these sorts of movies and the practice of actors performing in "yellowface" has almost completely been abandoned!

Important Added Info: Look closely at this still, and you see in the middle back of the crowd a guy who is holding his hand up behind his friend's head to give him "devil horns", just as someone would do today, 77 years later! Also note that this still measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm].

Condition: very good to fine. The still is in very nice condition!
