An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Beginner's Luck, the 1935 Gun Meins Our Gang juvenile comedy short (produced by Hal Roach) starring Spanky McFarland, Matthew 'Stymie' Beard, Scotty Beckett (best remembered for playing the young Al Jolson in "The Jolson Story"), Eileen Bernstein, Marianne Edwards, Billie 'Buckwheat' Thomas, James Morton, Alfalfa Switzer, and Harold Switzer (billed as the "Arizona Nightingales", both in their first movie). Note that this was Alfalfa's very first movie! He appeared with his older brother Harold as a pair of cowboy singers called "The Arizona Nightingales". Of course, Alfalfa would go on to great success with the Our Gang films, but brother Harold only appeared in a total of 33 movies between 1935 and 1940, many of them Our Gang movies (as an unbilled member of the gang). His bad luck followed him through his life. In 1967, he was the owner/operator of a laundromat, and he got in a dispute with a man, and he killed the man and then killed himself. He was just 42 years old. Eight years earlier, brother Carl had a similar sad life. He had many problems, and died at the age of 31.

Important Added Info: Note that someone wrote "Beginner's Luck" on the back of this still, but it appears that this is a candid image of the Our Gang members having their mouths checked by a nurse between scenes. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good to very good. There is a stain on the wall at upper right and tiny paper loss in the top left corner, and the top of the still has discolored unevenly.
