An Original Vintage Folded World War II Poster (measures 16" x 22" [41 x 56 cm]) (Learn More)

Selective Service Registration Wednesday, October 16, 1940, the 1940 U.S. World War II (WWII) recruitment poster ("All males who have passed their 21st birthday and have not reached their 36th birthday, whether citizen or alien, married or single, or with any physical disability must register. In New York City, register at a designated public school convenient to your home within the Assembly District where you live, between the hours of 7 AM and 9 PM") informing men that they must register with the Selective Service. Note that the Selective Service System was begun in 1917 when the U.S. entered World War I, and young men were drafted into the military. It was intended that men 21 to 35 originally had to register for the draft, but before the legislation was finalized, the age was lowered to 21 to 30 (and then, in 1918, the age was changed to 21 to 45). In 1920, it was discontinued. In 1940, when the prospect of America entering World War II was clearly just around the corner, the draft was re-instituted, and it was in place until 1947, when it was again discontinued. In 1948, a new system was put in place, which remained until 1969, and covered the entire Korean War, and also most of the Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War, many young men refused to register with the Selective Service System, choosing instead to go to Canada (or in a few cases, to go to jail). Sometimes, men would publicly burn their "draft cards" as a form of protest against the Vietnam War. In 1975, it was essentially ended, but in 1980, a new version of it was created, which exists to the present day.
