An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Scarlet Empress, the classic 1934 Josef von Sternberg historical biographical German-Princess-forced-to-marry-Russian-Duke-and-ends-up-ruling-the-country melodrama ("Her whisper was a command to love!"; "Based on the intimate diary of Catherine the Great"; a highly fictionalized biography of Catherine II) starring Marlene Dietrich (in the title role as Catherine the Great), John Lodge, Sam Jaffe, Louise Dresser, C. Aubrey Smith, Akim Tamiroff, and Jane Darwell (in an uncredited role). Note that this was the second to last movie of the seven movies that von Sternberg and Dietrich made together, and many reviewers think this was their best collaboration (one described it as "the most jaw dropping, sexually charged piece of cinema anyone could ever ask for"). It is a fictionalized biography of the story of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, and in the movie, Dietrich is required to change from an innocent young girl to a jaded experienced older woman, and everyone agrees that she did so magnificently. Movie posters of any kind from this movie have always been incredibly rare, at least as rare and possibly more so than those from the other Josef Von Sternberg/Marlene Dietrich films. Also note that male lead John Lodge has an interesting background! He came from an important New England family (his grandfather was William Henry Cabot Lodge), and he shocked them by becoming a movie actor! He appeared in a couple dozen movies between 1932 and 1940. He quit the movies to serve in World War II, and afterwards, in 1946, he became the second major movie actor ever to hold national political office, serving as a Congressman (the first was Helen Gahagan Douglas). In 1950, he became Governor of Connecticut, and later, he served as ambassador to several countries! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: As noted above, first release movie posters from this classic 1934 movie are incredibly rare. The only U.S. posters we have previously auctioned were window cards and jumbo window cards, and the window cards were in lesser condition, and the jumbo window cards auctioned for $3,850 and $4,500, and both those sales were over 20 years ago. We also auctioned a French one-panel in 1992 for $7,700 and a Belgian poster in 2014 for $3,200! Now we have been consigned a style A one-sheet from this movie. Not only have we never auctioned either style of one-sheet before, but we know of no example of the one-sheet from this classic film that has been previously publicly auctioned. The completely unrestored example of this poster auctioned here will sell to the highest bidder, and it will have a new owner at the conclusion of this auction, and we hope that it will sell to someone who will display it publicly! Condition: very good. The poster was lightly folded in half two extra times, resulting in four light extra vertical creases. There is 1/2" of separation at each crossfold, with small paper loss at the bottom crossfold. There are small tears and the tiniest bits of paper loss in the right half of the bottom horizontal fold and tiny creases in the top and bottom quarters of the vertical fold. There is tiny paper loss in the middle of the right blank border. There is a 7" semi-circular crease in the lower right corner of the image, in the solid black area, with a 1" tear in the middle of the right border at the end of that crease. There are tiny tears and one tiny area of paper loss in the bottom quarter of the right blank border. I go into extreme detail on the condition of this poster because of its great rarity and value. It surely was never displayed, because all the reds in the poster are quite vivid, and they would have surely faded at least somewhat had it been displayed. One could choose to leave the poster exactly as it is, have it paperbacked with minimal restoration, or have it linenbacked, but whatever the new owner chooses to do, the poster will display wonderfully, and the new owner will have an incredibly rare and beautiful poster to add to their collection!
