What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was backed onto a linen backing soon after the movie was made, with metal grommets in the corners. It was then folded once vertically and several times horizontally, bringing it to a 10" x 20" folded size. We have seen other posters from this period mounted on linen, and this poster has a heavier linen than those did. The poster acquired paper loss at several crossfolds and some tears and tiny paper loss on parts of some foldlines, and the poster has separated in the bottom 5" of the vertical foldline, both in the poster and in the linen backing (see our image), but it has otherwise survived surprisingly well, considering it is 100 years old. It certainly should be removed from the old linen and re-backed, and once that is done, the poster will look great!
