Strayer anti-Communist religion Cold War melodrama (this is a forgotten masterpiece!; it was made at a very start of the Cold War, and it tells the story of an American missionary who has been in the Far East for 20 years, and he returns to his home town, where he begins making speeches against the evils of Communism; but what the people don't know is that he is actually a spy who looks like the missionary, and he is gathering information for the Communist Chinese about how everyday Americans live, and he is supposed to make a nationwide radio speech in which he will do an about face and support Communism; but after the spy sees how wonderful American life is, he double-crosses his handlers, and begins to make a pro-American, pro-Democracy speech, and the real missionary, who is rotting away in a Chinese prison, hears the broadcast, because they wanted him to hear the spy denounce America!) starring Gene Lockhart, Kent Taylor, Gloria Holden, David Bruce, Anne O'Neal, Emmet Vogan, Gene Roth, and Charles Halton. Note that this movie was produced by the Lutheran Laymen's League and released under the title "The Sickle or the Cross" in 1949. It dealt with the evils of the Communist Chinese, and the title referred to Communism or Christianity. It was dusted off three years later after the Korean War began, and re-edited and re-released with the new title "Seeds of Destruction", and all references to Communist China were changed to North Korea. We have never seen any movie paper from that first 1949 release, and we have only had the one-sheet and the two-sheet from the 1952 re-release.
