An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Key Book Still (Learn More)

Arizona Bound, the 1927 John Waters silent cowboy western ("Story by Richard Allen Gates"; young Gary Cooper plays a cowboy who cares about his horse and a pretty girl, in that order, but she doesn't think much of him, because he has no ambition, but after he stops gold robbers and saves her from being kidnapped, he wins both a reward and her love) starring Gary Cooper, Betty Jewel, El Brendel, Jack Dougherty, Christian J. Frank, and Charles Crockett. Note that Cooper had had a succession of bit parts before having a small but good supporting role in "The Winning of Barbara Worth" (starring Ronald Colman and Vilma Banky) the year before this movie, and someone at Paramount saw that movie and wisely saw the great potential in him, and signed him to star in this movie, and he was super well received! That same year, he also had a tiny role in "It", and an important small role in "Wings", and he quickly became a major star, but this was his very first starring role. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: What an incredible comic candid still this is! It shows top stars of this movie, Gary Cooper and Betty Jewel, and they are strolling arm-in-arm, and they are pretending to be "walking" their cat, which is actually a Felix the Cat toy!

Note that this is one of ten wonderful Gary Cooper stills from the late 1920s and early 1930s that we were consigned, and are auctioning in ten separate auctions. Each comes from the same collection that contained the twenty rare Gary Cooper stills from the same time period that we auctioned in February 2021, and those were truly wonderful stills, and three of them auctioned for over $1,000 each, and the current ten stills include some equally wonderful ones! These stills were purchased by celebrity Johnny Crawford many years ago, when he purchased an incredible collection of stills that also included great early Laurel and Hardy stills (and we also have eight of those in eight separate auctions). Mr. Crawford first came to fame as the son in the TV series "The Rifleman" and later became a band leader loved movies, and early on he collected many stills and lobby cards. These ten rare early Gary Cooper stills were consigned to us from his collection!

Note that this still is a key book still, mounted to a linen backing. Many studios spent extra money to have their most special photos, the key book stills, either backed with linen or printed on a heavy paper, both of which enhanced their durability. They had an extra 1" at the left or top, with punch holes, because of how they were stored. Key book stills are far more rare than regular stills, which has increased their popularity among collectors, since only a few keybooks were manufactured per film, and a key book still is guaranteed to be authentic. Someone trimmed away the extra 1" from the left of the still.

Condition: very good. The left 1" was neatly trimmed off (see above). Otherwise, the still is in nice condition!
