A Linenbacked Swiss Art Exhibition Poster (measures 35" x 50" [89 x 127 cm]) (Learn More)

5000 Jahre Schrift (literally translates to "5000 Years of Lettering"), the 1936 Swiss poster (with a tagline that translates to "Development technology and application of writing") promoting an exhibition which took place from June 14th to July 19th at the Gewerbemuseum in Basel, Switzerland. Note that this poster features a handwritten and modern Bauhaus-style design by Theo Ballmer (which also shows Morse code for the word "Schrift"). Theo Ballmer was a Swiss graphic designer, photographer, and professor. He is best known for his Modernist poster designs which influenced the development of the International Typographic Style. In 1928, Ballmer enrolled in the Bauhaus, then under the direction of Meyer. At the school, he studied photography under Walter Peterhans. Ballmer left the Bauhaus in 1930, motivated by his left-leaning political beliefs. Ballmer is best-known for his political poster designs, produced directly after his departure from the school. The works are characterized by their use of red and black linocut silhouettes and often leftist messages. In the mid-1940s, Ballmer and his contemporary, Max Bill, pioneered a new style of graphic design characterized by the use of photography, sans serif typefaces, and logical arrangement of elements. The work produced by the two designers in this period proved foundational to the later emergence of the International Typographic Style.
Artist: Theo Ballmer

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had some small paper loss in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was either not well backed or roughly handled, or a combination of both, but it now has areas where the poster is torn and lifting from the linen in the top center, and also some creases and slight bubbling scattered in parts of the poster. The poster can be re-backed, but consider all of the above before bidding on this poster.
