An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 38 3/4" [62 x 98 cm]) (Learn More)

David Golder, the 1931 Julien Duvivier French Jewish family relationship evils-of-wealth melodrama (about a rich Jewish businessman who has a spoiled wife and daughter; he has no compassion whatsoever, but when he loses his fortune and suffers a heart attack and faces poverty, he thinks his wife and daughter will comfort him, but all they do is complain, and he comes to terrible realizations about how he should have led his life too late) starring Harry Baur (in the title role as David Golder), Paule Andral, Jackie Monnier, Jean Bradin, and Gaston Jacquet. Note that some people have claimed this movie was anti-Semitic because of its plot, and its timing was very unfortunate, being released in France and Germany at the exact time Hitler began his rise to power. The author of the screenplay was Irene Nemirowsky, a Jewish author who died in a concentration camp a decade later.

Important Added Info: Note that this is a very unusual "pre-War" Belgian poster. Normally, pre-War Belgian posters measure approximately 24" x 33", but the measurements can vary slightly. This poster has the same width, and it apparently had the usual top play dates area printed on it. But at some point in 1932, a different theater was showing this movie, and they took the poster and trimmed off the 2" top play dates area (no doubt because it had old information on it) and then they printed a new snipe that measures just under 9" and glued that to the top of the poster! Read on for more about pre-War Belgian posters. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster's blank top area was trimmed off, and a different play dates snipe was attached to it . Otherwise, the poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
