An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 10 3/4" x 14" [27 x 36 cm]; 140 pages) (Learn More)

Paramount Pictures 1937-38 ("The Best Shows in Town for 1937-1938"), the 1937 Paramount campaign book sent to theater owners to encourage them to show Paramount movies. The book includes many pages with two-page and three-page spreads on Paramount's upcoming movies and stars (apparently this was an experiment they tried this year where they advertised each movie but having a three-page spread about the movie, where the right page folded over like a centerfold and had the name of the movie on it; you opened up that page to see the three-page spread). Some of the movies and stars advertised include Angel (Marlene Dietrich), Sapphire Sal (Mae West), True Confession (Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray), Things Began to Happen (W.C. Fields), Beau Geste (George Raft), Midnight (Marlene Dietrich), Professor Beware (Harold Lloyd), and many more! There is a three-page fold-out section that advertises Betty Boop cartoons, another two-page spread for Fleischer cartoons with an incredible full-page ad for Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, plus much more! We have included images of the front cover of the book and seven of the interior pages, and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones, and we really wish we could have pictured them all. IMPORTANT! Note that we pictured some of the three-page spreads with the title page folded in and only the facing page showing (had we opened that title page, you would have seen all three pages of the three-page spread). Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars!

Important Added Info: Note: We have 13 images of this campaign book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 13 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 3.

Condition: fair. There is paper loss in the lower left blue area of the cover, with many scuffs on the back cover. All of the interior pages were lightly water stained in the top right. There are not stuck together, but they are lightly rippled, and some are discolored. There are also two pages in the later part of the book that have small areas cut out. Please bear in mind all these defects before bidding on this book.
