An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Movie Poster (measures 44 1/4" x 62 1/2" [112 x 159 cm]) (Learn More)

If Winter Comes, the 1948 Victor Saville pre-World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle melodrama ("Three Women in His Life... Was he a Love Thief?"; "A.S.M. Hutchinson's beloved classic of English country life becomes a screen masterpiece!"; "Based on the novel by A.S.M. Hutchinson"; set in England on the eve of World War II, about a man who is a writer who marries a woman on the rebound, but then his ex-girlfriend shows up with her new husband, and it makes it difficult for all four people, and things are further complicated by the man's relationship with a beautiful teenage girl, which starts rumors in the small English town, but the impending war changes all of their lives) starring Walter Pidgeon, Deborah Kerr, Angela Lansbury, Janet Leigh (in only her second credited role!), Binnie Barnes, and Dame May Whitty. This could have been a much different movie, for several reasons! David O. Selznick bought the rights of the book in 1939. He intended on casting either Joan Fontaine or Vivien Leigh in the female leads and Leslie Howard or Laurence Olivier in the male leads. At one point, Robert Donat and Greer Garson were set to star, under direction of Alexander Korda, but neither of those versions occurred, and the movie was not made until after the war, and all new actors were selected. It is of great irony that Angela Lansbury, who was 22 years-old at this time, wanted to play the teenage girl in the movie, but was instead given the role of the 35 year-old "other woman", and the part of the teenage girl went to newcomer Janet Leigh, who was 20, so Leigh was only two years younger than Lansbury, but was playing a girl around 18 years younger!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this poster, and it has now been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned!

Note that Italian posters from the first few years after World War II are among the most rare posters there are, and they were almost all not the standard Italian sizes that became standard in the late 1940s (the 39x55 one-panel, the 55x78 two-panel, etc). These are likely so rare because there were still major paper shortages in Italy right after World War II, and few posters were printed, and most were recycled. This is an extremely rare first release Italian poster from 1948.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had paper loss at the crossfolds and some small tears and small areas of paper loss on parts of some folds, and in parts of the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Note that at some point after the poster was backed, it acquired a tiny area of surface paper loss in the top center of the poster in the woman's hair (any restorer could touch up that area without re-backing the poster).
