An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 32 3/4" x 47" [83 x 119 cm]) (Learn More)

Der Deutsche Tanz (literally translates to "The German Dance"), the 1934 German poster promoting a costumed dance event/festival which was held on February 6th at the Deutsches Theater in Munich, Germany. Note that this poster features E. Bohm art of a sexy woman dancing in an elegant gown. Munich (the Bavarian capital) used to be a carnival/festival stronghold from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century until well into the 1930s, and it is in fact alive and kicking today. In 1914 alone, there were 533 masked balls and 145 black and white balls. This phenomenon of decadent hustle and bustle was created in particular by the artists of the Schwabinger Boheme, at first in the form of wild studio festivals, but increasingly also by artists' balls. The Deutsches Theater in Munich was opened in 1896. Alexander Blum, Joseph Rank and Karl Stohr built the theatre in the style of the (neo) baroque, which was also called "fairy palace". The complex contained an auditorium with 1679 seats, a smaller auditorium (called Silver Hall), restaurants, cafe, shops and 30 apartments. The theater was originally used primarily for vaudeville events, but also for popular comedies, folk plays, sporting events and carnival balls. Josephine Baker gave a performance in the theater but was banned in 1929. In 1943, the theatre was destroyed by bombs. The theater was rebuilt and re-opened in 1951. Since the 1960s, the variety of performances was extended also to classic drama, ballet, operetta and musical.
