An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Six-Sheet Movie Poster (6sh; measures 81" x 81" [206 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

Mr. Wong, Detective, the 1938 William Nigh murder mystery crime thriller ("Hugh Wiley's famous Collier's Magazine Chinese detective") starring Boris Karloff (in the title role as Mr. Wong), Grant Withers, Maxine Jennings, Evelyn Brent, George Lloyd, and John St. Polis. Note that there was a character called "Mr. Wong" in the 1935 movie "The Mysterious Mr. Wong", and he was played by Bela Lugosi. In 1938, "Mr. Wong, Detective" was made, starring Boris Karloff in the title role, and this Mr. Wong was an Chinese detective and had no relationship to the earlier Bela Lugosi character (this was based on a series of "James Lee Wong" stories in Collier's Magazine written by Hugh Wiley). This proved popular, and there were four more movies with Karloff playing Mr. Wong in 1939 and 1940. In 1940, he left the role, and one more movie was made, "Phantom of Chinatown", starring Keye Luke in the lead role, but that was the last of the series (perhaps it was the loss of Karloff that ended the series, or perhaps 1940 was not a good time for U.S. movies with an Asian hero).

Important Added Info: Note that this six-sheet was printed in 5 sections designed to overlap (most six-sheets of this period were printed in four sections, but on this one, there are three top sections instead of the usual two). Since there is a large center section and two narrower left and right sections, it is obvious that this was done intentionally so that the large headshot image of Karloff could be on a single section, and not be divided down the center, which makes a lot of sense to us! Also note that this six-sheet was not folded in the usual way. It was folded in an odd fashion which results in the folded poster measuring approximately 15" x 21", so the poster will have to be sent in a larger-than-usual flat package.

Condition: good. The poster was printed in five pieces, and each has many tears and small areas of paper loss scattered around the edges. There are two foreign stamps, one in the top of the "l" of "Karloff" and one in the "M" of "Mr.". All of the pieces of the poster are fragile and there are several tape repairs on the back. Certainly the poster has clear defects, but they are the sort that a talented restorer can repair, and likely without putting a lot of paint on the poster. After proper linenbacking, the poster will look great, but please do not bid on it unless you can accept its defects.
