An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

The Painted Desert, the 1931 Howard Higgin cowboy western (about two men who find an abandoned baby and they spend the rest of their lives arguing over who should have custody) starring William Boyd (billed as "Bill Boyd"), Helen Twelvetrees, William Farnum, J. Farrell MacDonald, and Clark Gable (in his very first real movie; he played a villain!). Note that Gable had appeared in 13 movies between 1923 and 1926, but all in uncredited roles, and he became disillusioned and went to Broadway, where he achieved success. He had one more uncredited role in 1930, but most people consider this his first "real" movie, because he played the lead villain.

Important Added Info: Note that we auctioned this very poster one year ago, in 2018, in our Major Auction. The high bidder from that auction did not pay, and we are offering it again now (but it is still the only movie poster from this movie we have ever auctioned!). Also note that, as noted above, this was Clark Gable's first real movie. After he had success on Broadway, he was signed for this movie, and I have seen the pressbook, and it says that "the heavy" is played by Clark Gable, who has been on Broadway! I also have seen the one-sheet image in the pressbook, and it has a giant headshot of William Boyd. This three-sheet has a masked outlaw on it, and we would think it is extremely likely that this shows Clark Gable's outlaw character! Also note that ANY movie paper from this movie is extremely rare! We have only auctioned two lobby cards and a handful of stills, but no posters until we were consigned this three-sheet, and it may be many, many years before we are consigned another poster.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, we have never auctioned any first release posters from this movie until we were consigned this one, and it has a most unusual origin! Some theater was looking for a poster to use as a stock poster for an entirely different western star in the 1940s, and they put paint over the entire title and credits, and some over part of the image, and then painted in a new title and stars in those areas. At that point, you couldn't even tell what movie was being advertised under the added paint. The owner gambled that there would be a worthwhile poster underneath, and a very talented restorer laboriously removed all of the paint that had been added to the poster. They then mounted the poster, which had the following defects: It had small paper loss at some crossfolds and small tears and paper loss on parts of some folds, more so in the top one-quarter of the middle vertical fold. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. A really talented restorer expertly repaired the above defects. The poster displays really well, but some of the solid colored areas and letters had to be colored in, to "even them out".
