An Original Vintage Unfolded German Political Campaign Poster (measures 33" x 47 1/4" [84 x 120 cm]) (Learn More) Wem Hindenburg Vertraut, Dem Darf Deutschalnd Vertrauen (literally translates to "Whom Hindenburg Trusts, Germany Can Trust"), the 1932 German political campaign poster encouraging people to vote for Franz von Papen as Vice-Chancellor of Germany. Papen was a politician who served as Chancellor of Germany in 1932 and as Vice-Chancellor under Adolf Hitler in 1933-34. It was largely Papen, believing that Hitler could be controlled once he was in the government, who persuaded President Paul von Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as Chancellor. However, Papen and his allies were quickly marginalized by Hitler and he left the government after the Night of the Long Knives, during which the Nazis killed some of his confidantes. Paul von Hindenburg was a military officer and statesman who commanded the German military during the second half of World War I (WWI) before later being elected President of the Weimar Republic in 1925. He played a key role in the Nazi "Seizure of Power" when he appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor. Hindenburg died in 1934, after which Hitler declared himself Fuhrer and Reichskanzler (Supreme Leader and Chancellor). Note that Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and created government program posters as well as advertisements for the 1936 Munich Olympics. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that this poster is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has tape on the back of the top border, which has darkened part of the front of the top blank border. There are some tiny tears near the bottom of the left blank border that were repaired with tape from the back. Otherwise, the poster is in wonderful condition, especially considering its age!
