An Undated (probably 1910s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 42" [69 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) A Thief Catcher, the 1914 Ford Sterling silent comedy short starring Ford Sterling, Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin; in his fourth movie as an uncredited cop), William Hauber, George Jeske, and Edgar Kennedy. Note that no posters survive from the very first release of this movie. However, Chaplin became so incredibly popular in the year after this that practically EVERY theater showed at least one Chaplin short on their program, because customers insisted on going to theaters that had them. To satisfy this amazing demand, his early shorts were all re-issued in the middle 1910s, and stock posters were created showing artwork of Chaplin as his famous Tramp chracter, with different titles printed in the lower center. They not only did this with his actual Tramp shorts, but they also did it with all the shorts he had appeared in. This practice was especially duplicitous for this movie (which was renamed "The Thief Catcher") as Chaplin only appeared as an uncredited Keystone Kop. In fact, it wasn't until film historian Paul E. Gierucki discovered a 16mm print of this previously "lost" film in 2010 that his role could be confirmed. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a stock poster (almost surely from the middle 1910s) that has a specific Charlie Chaplin title listed on it (in this case, "The Thief Catcher"). See above for more on this. Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 27" x 42" [69 x 107 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was slightly trimmed on the left and right blank borders, to bring the poster to 27" wide from the original 28" (1/2" was trimmed from each blank border, and only blank white paper was affected). It was folded in half an extra time and it had small or tiny paper loss at the crossfolds. It had some tears around the edges (some of which had been repaired with tape from the back). It had a small area of circular paper loss in the left of the top foldline in the white background area. It had some writing on the back of the top center that slightly bled through in the white background area to the right of Chaplin. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! The restorer did not replace the slight missing blank white paper on the left or right. Learn More about condition grades
