A Linenbacked Travel Poster (measures 18 3/4" x 26 3/4" [48 x 68 cm]) (Learn More) Los Angeles Cal., the 1920s Los Angeles Steamship Company cruise ship sailing travel poster ("Land of year-'round enchantment"; "Always delightful for rest or play") encouraging people to visit Hawaii aboard the SS City of Honolulu and the SS City of Los Angeles cruise ships. The Los Angeles Steamship Company (LASSCO) was a passenger and freight shipping company based in Los Angeles, California. The company, formed in 1920, initially provided fast passenger service between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1921, they added service to Hawaii using two former North German Lloyd ocean liners that had been in U.S. Navy service during World War I (WWI). Despite the sinking of one of the former German liners on her maiden voyage for the company, business in the booming 1920s thrived, and the company continued to add ships and services. In 1922, the City of Los Angeles, a renamed and refitted liner was one of the largest American ships sailing in Pacific waters. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that while this poster is backed on linen, it can't be rolled, and it will need to be sent in a very large flat package that measures approximately 22" x 30". Please bear in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Note also that this really cool travel poster was for this steam ship line that operated travel from Los Angeles to Honolulu and back again by steam ship. This poster shows two different Hawaiian scenes with natives and with two steam ships and palm trees above them. We have never auctioned this poster before. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had many creases scattered throughout with tears and paper loss around the edges and some stains and smudges scattered throughout. Many years ago someone mounted it on to a thick linen and did very minimal restoration. At some point over the years, it was partially folded down the center (both in the poster and in the linen backing). Please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid and please do not bid unless you can accept the defects described above, or you are willing to pay to have them properly restored.
