An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece!

Artist: Saul Bass
Important Added Info: Note that there is controversy about the first release one-sheets from this movie. There are known examples where the primary background color is pretty much "red", and then others where the primary background color is pretty much "orange". Some people say that the poster was created with two different colors, while others say that the "orange" one-sheets are simply "red" one-sheets that were exposed to sunlight. I don't have a definitive answer, but because I have seen one-sheets in many different color ranges from pretty clearly red down to almost yellow (where the poster HAS clearly faded), that makes me feel it is possible that the posters were not printed in two different versions, but it is also possible that there were two versions, and some of each have simply faded (and this is further backed by my having seen "orange" versions that have extremely even coloring, which would seem like they were not faded at all). Also note that most collectors don't realize that Saul Bass did many different designs for this classic movie! All look very similar, with the classic swirl, but the two figures are different on many of the posters!

Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson.

Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since!

But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world!

Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions!

As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked).

This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones).

This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled!

Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "Saul Bass".

Condition: very good. The poster has very tiny paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds. It has pinholes in the corners. It has minor wear on the folds, and some faint creases scattered throughout. There are small smudges in the "TI" of "VERTIGO" at bottom center, and there is a stamp on the back of the bottom that slightly bleeds through to the front in the middle of the "R" and in the background above it. There is tiny separation at the bottom of the vertical fold and a small diagonal crease and a smudge in the bottom left blank corner. The poster was attached to a mat with a piece of tape on the back of the left and right of the top border, and there are smudges on the back of the bottom quarter of the poster (what was on the outside when it was fully folded), but it does not affect the front. The poster could absolutely be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or one could choose to have the above defects corrected through linenbacking. Either way, the new owner will have a wonderful poster to display on their wall!
