An Original Vintage English Movie Trade Ad (measures 17 1/4" x 22 1/4" [44 x 57 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More)

The Dark Command, the 1940 Raoul Walsh Kansas post-Civil War cowboy western ("A drama of undying love"; about a band of renegade Confederate guerrillas who go around looting; loosely based on the real William Quantrill; they even named the character "William Contrell"!) starring Claire Trevor, John Wayne, Walter Pidgeon, Roy Rogers, George 'Gabby' Hayes, Porter Hall, Marjorie Main, and Raymond Walburn. Note that even though Roy Rogers had starred in many B-westerns at the time of the making of this movie, he was fourth billed, and was not pictured on any of the posters (except the insert and the style B 1SH [where he is barely visible!]), or the title lobby card (although he was pictured on one of the publicity stills, perhaps Republic was trying to distinguish this movie as an "A" picture, and did not want to give prominent billing to Roy Rogers, who they perceived as a "B" western star?).

Important Added Info: Note that this is a great trade ad taken out of a Kinematograph Weekly English trade magazine (we have a number of them in this set of auctions, and also other English trade ads with various amounts of pages). Studios would run these elaborate ads in issues of this magazine, and they often had images not found on any of the regular movie posters (either English or U.S.). This trade ad was removed from a 1940 issue of this magazine, and it will look incredible displayed on the new owner's wall. Because the back of this trade ad also relates to the same movie, we have pictured the other side (see our images of both sides).

Condition: very good. The ad was removed from a magazine (see above). It was the centerfold of the magazine so the pages are on a single sheet, and there are staple holes at the spine (see our images).
