An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Casablanca, the classic 1942 Michael Curtiz (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) anti-Nazi World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle melodrama ("From a play by Murray Burnett and June Alison"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; it is interesting to note that the movie was made while World War II was being fought, and at a point when it seemed very real that Germany might take over the entire world, and in that context, the strong emotions expressed throughout the movie are all the more poignant, given what was going on in the world at that time) starring Humphrey Bogart (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as "Rick", Richard Blaine), Ingrid Bergman (as Ilsa Lund), Paul Henreid (as Victor Laszlo), Claude Rains (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Renault), Conrad Veidt (as Major Strasser), Sydney Greenstreet (as Signor Ferrari), Peter Lorre (as Ugarte), S.Z. Sakall (as Carl), Dooley Wilson (as Sam), Madeleine LeBeau (as Yvonne), Leonid Kinskey (as Sascha), John Qualen (as Berger), Marcel Dalio (as Emil, the croupier at the roulette wheel), Corinna Mura (as the cabaret singer who plays the guitar and sings "La Marseillaise"), Helmut Dantine (as the young man playing roulette), and Joy Page (as Dantine's girlfriend, who is willing to sleep with Rains)
NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card is from the most famous scene in the film at the climax, where the four main characters are gathered at Rick's cafe, and Bogart double-crosses Claude Rains on the names to be entered on the "letters of transit". It is referred to in the hobby as the "letters of transit" scene, and it is the most desired Casablanca lobby card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

UPDATED 07/21/2022: Note that there is an oddity to first release Casablanca lobby cards. There are ones where the background is a "reddish orange" and others where the background is a "light orange". Some people think that all of the cards originally had the darker background color and that the lighter ones are examples where that color faded to the light orange color, and others think they were originally printed with two different background colors (and we know for sure that there were multiple printings of first release lobby cards for this super popular movie, because we have seen ones where the colors of the actors' clothes in the main image are different).

This is very similar to the situation that exists with first release one-sheets from Vertigo, where there are one-sheets with a darker red background, and others with an orange background, and there are dissenting opinions as to whether these represent different printings or fading.

Please know that the Casablanca lobby card offered here is one of the ones with the "light orange" background, and please do not bid on this card unless you can accept the uncertainly as to whether it was printed with that background color or the color has "shifted" from a reddish orange.

What IS gelbacking? Learn More

Condition: very good. The right 3" of the card was folded back at one time. It had tiny pinholes around the edges, with a 1/4" tear in the center of the bottom border. Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed excellent restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the card still exactly looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the card displays really well!
