An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Campaign Book Page (measures 12" x 16" [30 x 41 cm]; 2 pages) (Learn More) a campaign book page advertising both Casey at the Bat, the 1927 Monte Brice baseball sports melodrama starring Wallace Beery, Ford Sterling, Sterling Holloway, and Zasu Pitts AND Variete (released in English-speaking countries as "Variety"), the 1925 E.A. Dupont (Ewald Andre Dupont) German silent circus carnival romantic love triangle melodrama ("Written and Directed by E.A. Dupont"; "An UFA Production") starring Emil Jannings, Lya de Putti, Maly Delschaft, Warwick Ward, and Alice Hechy. Note that in the American release of this movie, it tells of a former famous aerialist in a German circus who was crippled while performing, and who has a beautiful young wife, but can only work in the concession stand; his wife has an affair with a handsome young acrobat and the husband kills him; after serving a long prison term, the old man is released from jail. This was drastically different than the original German version! In that version, which had twice as long of a running time, Jannings had a wife he deserts to begin an affair with de Putti (in the American version, the wife is never seen or mentioned), and de Putti is his girlfriend, and not his wife. This changed the entire meaning of the movie, for in the German version, it shows how a man betrays his wife and then ironically, he is betrayed himself, but this was too scandalist for American censors, who also cut scenes they deemed too sexual, including one where Jannings helps de Putti take off her clothes!. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Edmund Davenport & Harry J. Etchells Important Added Info: Note that this page was removed from a campaign book (studio yearbook). One side of the page advertise the Casey at the Bat (with art by Edmund Davenport), and the other side features the 1927 William Fox release of Variety (with art by Harry J. Etchells), and we have pictured both sides. Condition: very good. The page was removed from a campaign book that had punch holes at the spine, but otherwise, the page is in pretty nice condition!
