An Original Vintage Theatrical Promotional Movie Brochure (measures 9" x 14 1/2" [23 x 37 cm]; 3 pages) (Learn More) John Cassavetes' Shadows, the classic 1959 John Cassavetes New York City counter-culture interracial romantic love triangle family relationship melodrama starring Lelia Goldoni, Ben Carruthers, Hugh Hurd, Anthony Ray, Dennis Sallas, Tom Allen, Rupert Crosse, Greta Thyssen. Note that John Cassavetes first filmed this in 1956 and 1957 (he had appeared on Jean Shepherd's radio show, and raised the seed money for the movie from Shepherd's "Night People"!). He completed it in 1957, but was unhappy with it, and he shelved it, and in 1959, he re-shot much of it, and it was released in New York (and was released in other countries two years later in 1961). The success of this movie got Cassavetes a Hollywood contract to direct "Too Late Blues" in 1961 and "A Child is Waiting" in 1963. Decades later, a copy of the 1957 version of "Shadows" was discovered, and there has been a restoration of the movie using various surviving prints. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned this promo brochure once before, and that example has been re-consigned to us, so it is still the only example we have ever auctioned. It is printed on a single 14 3/4" x 18" sheet that is folded down the middle. The front and back covers have the same image on them. The first interior page has a summary of "the story and shooting script for Shadows" with the credits below, and an image of Cassavetes. The facing interior page is blank, but it clearly once had something attached to it, because there are tape stains along the bottom and partially in the left and right. We don't know what that was, because we have never seen this before. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: fair.
