An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Twenty-Four-Sheet Movie Poster (24sh; measures approximately 9' x 20') (Learn More)

The Dawn Patrol, the 1938 Edmund Goulding World War I (WWI) airplane pilot aviation thriller ("From an original story by John Monks Saunders"; about British pilots in World War I flying primitive airplanes that crash with regularity, and one of the pilots, played by Flynn, criticizes the Major, played by Rathbone, for sending men to their death, but then Rathbone is promoted, and Flynn is faced with the same difficult decisions, and he orders his best friend's younger brother on a mission that kills him, which puts a massive rift between him and his best friend) starring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, David Niven, Donald Crisp, Melville Cooper, Barry Fitzgerald, James Stephenson, Stuart Hall, Carl Esmond, and Morton Lowry. Note that this movie bears many similarities to "Twelve O'Clock High", where pilots faced the same difficulties in World War II.

Important Added Info: Note that first release 24-sheets from ANY 1930s movies are unbelievably rare, for good reason. They were glued to billboards (they were originally created in 24 one-sheet-sized pieces), so they literally could NOT be "taken down" afterwards, and the only way a 24-sheet survived is if it was never used, and surely the vast majority of those unused ones ended up destroyed in 1940s World War II paper drives. Prior to being consigned this poster, we had previously auctioned (22 years ago) a 24-sheet for Jezebel, and 5 years ago, we auctioned a 24-sheet for Love on the Run, making this the third 24-sheet from ANY 1930s movie we have ever auctioned! The rarity level of 1930s 24-sheets is off the charts when compared to any other type of collectible, period! Also note that this poster has been professionally linenbacked! While this almost certainly cost thousands of dollars to do, and the new owner will save that money, it also means that the poster must be sent in a roughly 9 foot long tube, which will have to go by a "freight" method, which will surely be quite expensive in the U.S. and prohibitively expensive outside the U.S. But of course, that shipping cost will be far under the cost of linenbacking the poster, which the new owner will have saved! However, please incorporate the shipping cost when placing a bid on this remarkable and beyond rare poster. Amazingly, we are also auctioning a first release three-sheet from this movie in a separate auction.

Finally, note that we do not have a photography setup that can handle a poster that is this size and in one piece (because it is linenbacked). Therefore, we have used the picture that was in the auction catalog that our consignor bought this poster from many years ago. Of course, that auction house actually photographed the poster itself, so it is definitely an image of the poster you will be receiving, although not as high quality as we would have preferred.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. As noted above, we used the image from the auction catalog our consignor purchased this from, because we do not have a photography setup that can photograph a poster this large (see above). PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AUCTION IMAGE DID NOT DO JUSTICE TO THIS POSTER! THE BACKGROUND IN THE LOWER HALF IS A LIGHT YELLOW, AND IN THE UPPER HALF IS A LIGHT GREEN, AND BOTH THOSE COLORS WERE "WASHED OUT" BY THE CATALOG IMAGE. We GUARANTEE you will agree this poster looks FAR more impressive in person than it does in the auction catalog image! The poster had small paper loss at some of the crossfolds and small tears, small paper loss, and darkening on parts of the folds, and some smudges in the white background areas. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and you can see signs of the restoration, but it is definitely not distracting, and this amazing billboard-sized poster will display incredibly on its new owner's wall (and we hope it is in a public place or museum where lots of people can get to see it)!
