Did you know... how we get such high quality images of what we auction?

People often comment to us that they are amazed at how "high quality" the images we provide are for all our auctions (and remember that we ALWAYS take new digital images for EVERY auction item, so we need to take many thousands of new images every WEEK)! Also, we NEVER digitally enhance ANY of those images, but of course we make every effort to take the best images possible, shooting them exactly straight on, to avoid shape distortion, have great lighting so there is no glare or color distortion, etc).

People often ask us how THEY can achieve similar quality of images when photographing their own collections, and we are happy to share all our "secrets", but bear in mind that having the best possible set-up is expensive, so each collector has to decide how much expense they are willing to bear! But if you DO want to duplicate what we have (or any part of it) here are the details (note that we have TWO virtually identical wall set-ups, and a "photobooth", plus a scanner. We will soon be adding a second photobooth, and in a few months we will likely add a second scanner section):

About our cameras and photography walls & booth. We photograph with high quality Canon EOS 70D and Canon Rebel XS digital cameras with Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II SLR Lens, respectively. We use professional Alienbees lighting (the B400 and B800 units with the AWFT14MMUV flashtube bulbs). For the walls, we painted two sheets of 4 foot by 8 foot steel black and then screwed them to the wall together making an 8 foot by 8 foot "magnetic wall". Similarly, we painted a 3 foot by 5 foot sheet of steel black for the photobooth. We then use strong magnets to hold the posters to the wall.

About our magnets. We get our magnets from http://www.kjmagnetics.com/. We use the ones that are cube shaped and also the ones that look like pushpins (the little handle on them make these strong magnets much easier to handle).

Know too that we absolutely always photograph the exact item being auctioned. The only exception is for our Fixed Price Store items. For those, we only include items that are in almost identical condition (mostly posters that are in really great shape), and because they are, we can photograph only one of them, and we let that photo represent all examples (but again, this ONLY happens for Fixed Price items that are in identical condition). Of course, if a person were to receive one that is in lesser condition than the one we pictured, we would offer to take it back or exchange it.

While we always do take a new picture every time we auction an item, I can see how a person might mistakenly think we "re-used" an earlier picture. How can this happen? Sometimes we are consigned more than one example of a poster from the same consignor that were stored in the same way for years, so they are typically in identical (or near identical) condition. In those cases, the photos will look nearly the same, but we absolutely photograph every item that goes to auction, and we take great care to make sure the correct photos are always on the correct auctions. This adds a lot of time and expense to the auctions that we do.

Below are a few photos of our photograph setups.

1) Here is our left side photography wall (where we shoot the very best items!)

2) Here is our right side photography wall

3) Here is our "photobooth" (the camera is out of view because it is mounted above the table)

4) Here you can see the two photo walls and the photobooth

5) Here is our high quality scanner for single stills and lobby cards
