Cool Item Of the Week: Spirit of Notre Dame pressbook cover & interior featuring Frankenstein!

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 04/13/2011

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

This week, I have the pressbook cover for Spirit of Notre Dame, The Spirit of Notre Dame, the 1931 Russell Mack college university football sports melodrama ("Dedicated to the memory of Knute Rockne"; produced by Carl Laemmle Jr.; loosely based on the life of Knute Rockne, who died just before the movie was finished filming; about a Notre Dame coach and a brash young star, and how the coach assigns the star to block for another teammate to teach him humility, and he refuses, which causes him to be benched, but during the climactic Army game, he comes into the game and helps them win; there is also a subplot about the coach and a player in the hospital, obviously based on the real-life George Gipp) starring Lew Ayres, William Bakewell, Sally Blane, J. Farrell MacDonald, and Andy Devine, as well as a host of actual college football stars including "The Four Horseman" (Don Miller, James Crowley, Elmer Layden, and Harry A. Stuhldreher), and "Notre Dame's Greatest Stars" Frank Carideo ("All-American Quarterback"), Larry ("Moon") Mullins, John Law, Adam Walsh, John J. O'Brien, Al Howard, Arthur McManmon, and "Bucky" O'Connor.

The added cool thing about this pressbook is it includes an ad for "Frankenstein" billing it as "The biggest picture of the year"!

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 25,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!).
