Cool Item Of the Week: Nobody's Children pressbook

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 02/04/2019

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

So below is the pressbook from Nobody's Children, the 1940 Charles Barton orphan handicapped children adoption family relationship melodrama (adapted from the popular radio program of the same name; "Who'll lift the stigma... 'Unwanted'...from these youthful hearts?"; "'If you grown-ups think you have problems ...wait 'til you hear what us kids are up against!'") starring Edith Fellows, Billy Lee, Lois Wilson, Walter White Jr. and Georgia Caine. Note that this movie was inspired by Walter White Jr.'s radio program, "Nobody's Children," which broadcast from orphanages and interviewed real orphans in an attempt to locate homes for them! The movie has a fictionalized plot (a real tearjerker!) about an orphaned brother and sister, and the sister, an older teen, is "crippled", so while many families want adopt the cute younger brother, none want his sister, and he refuses to leave the orphanage without her; she convinces him to go with a family without her, and then, when she gets too old for the orphanage and is about to be sent to a "state home for the disabled", a couple whose husband overcame a handicap adopts her, and that is only the beginning of the plot twists, with a wildly implausible ending!).

Here is an image of the pressbook's cover and two interior pages:

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 20,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!). And remember to check out our previous Cool Items of the Week in our Cool Item of the Week archive (which is fully searchable!).
