Certainly, everyone is aware that traditional paper products (like books, magazines, and newspapers) are suffering due to the advent of the Internet. While those of us who grew up reading traditional books, magazines, and newspapers still prefer to read them over reading the very same information on a computer monitor, no one knows whether today's children (who grew up used to computer monitors) will have the same bias. It seems quite possible that all books, magazines, and newspapers will disappear over the next 20 or so years. After all, why print one million copies of a book or newspaper, when the same information can be transmitted at no cost over the Internet?
But that is not what we are asking here! We are wondering if paper movie posters will suffer the same fate. Movie theaters could easily install flat screens on their walls, and then download entire trailers to each screen, so that those visiting the theater would not simply see a single image, but could instead see an actual entire trailer, or scenes from the movie! Of course, the initial cost of the flat screens would be more than the frames used to hold the posters, but this would completely eliminate the need to distribute paper posters, and one would have to think that over time the savings in printing and shipping would more than offset the cost of the flat screens.
So we are asking, do you think that paper movie posters will be like buggy whips and eight track tapes, and completely disappear over time (for example, press kits used to contain a group of paper stills, and they mostly all now contain a DVD with digital files)? And if so, when do you think this will occur, and what effect do you think it will have on the movie poster hobby and on the value of movie posters?
Please pick one of the options below, and then please expand on why you chose the option that you did, or anything else you would like to share with the rest of the e-mail club.
