Marta Eggerth (billed in some German movies as "Martha Eggerth") was a Hungarian opera star and movie actress from the 1930s to the 1990s. As a small child, she performed on stage where everybody marveled at her singing voice, and at the age of 10, she was called Hungary's "national idol". She began making movies in Germany, and she met another very successful opera singer, Jan Kiepura, and over the next few years, they fell in love and married, having two sons. In 1935, she was supposed to go to the U.S. and appear in a movie for Universal called "Song of Joy", but that never happened, and we don't know why! In 1938, Eggerth and her family moved to France and then to the United States. She and Kiepura remained married until he passed away in 1966, and Eggerth passed away in 2013 at the age of 101. Some of her movies include: For Me and My Gal, Presenting Lily Mars, Das Hofkonzert, Leise Flehen meine Lieder, and My Heart is Calling. Note that it appears that she was born "Marta Eggert" in Hungary, and when she appeared in German movies, her name was changed to "Martha Eggerth", and when she appeared in U.S. movies, she reverted to "Marta", but kept the "Eggerth"! She passed away in 2013 at the age of 101.
