GWILI ANDRE

Gwili Andre (born Gurli Andresen) was a Danish actress from the 1930s to the 1940s. She was a model in Europe, and she married in 1929 and moved to New York City with her first husband. She was spotted by David O. Selznick, and he tried to make her into another Garbo, but while she was very beautiful, she lacked acting talent (she likely had other talents, because she soon separated from her husband, a situation similar to that with Selznick and Jennifer Jones a decade later!). After a few lead roles that flopped, she had supporting roles into the middle 1940s, when she married and divorced again. She moved back to Denmark and then to New York, and then California, and in 1959, she tragically died in a house fire in her apartment. She was 51.
