James Eastland was a Mississippi politician from the 1920s to the 1970s. Initially a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, Eastland was elected senator for over thirty four years! He opposed integration during the Civil Rights Movement. He also infamously denied that Mississippi had any Klu Klux Klan members in a conversation with Lyndon Johnson regarding the Freedom Summer disappearances. He passed away in 1986 at the age of 81.
