LYA MARA

Lya Mara (born Aleksandra Gudowiczowna) was a Latvian-born (at the time part of the Russian Empire) actress from the 1910s to the 1930s. She was trained as a ballerina, but in 1918, she met director Friedrich Zelnik, and they soon married and he starred her in his films. She had great success in German films of the 1920s, but when sound came in, she did not adapt well and only made a couple more movies before retiring (although he husband continued to direct). When Hitler came to power, they moved to England, where he continued to make movies. He passed away in 1950, and she passed away in 1960 ath the age of 62. Some of her movies include: I Want a Husband, Anna Karenina (in the title role), The Joyless Street, and Dancing Vienna
