William Gillette was a stage and movie actor and writer from the 1880s to the 1930s. He is most remembered for his "Sherlock Holmes" plays and films. He is credited with Holmes' stereotypical curved Meerschaum pipe, which he always used in his portrayals, rather than the more accurate straight clay pipes that Holmes always smoked in the stories. Gilette passed away in 1937 at the age of 83.
