Joe Rock was a director, actor and producer from the 1910s to the 1950s. He is best remembered for producing the 12 two-reel Stan Laurel shorts in the 1920s. He is a bizarre footnote in Academy Award history. His 1933 short subject movie "Krakatoa" was awarded an Academy Award in 1934, but he was in Europe at the time, and the company folded soon after the awards, and his name had been left off the credits, and the Academy refused to turn over the award to him! 50 years later, he discovered paperwork proving that he had produced the movie, and the Academy gave him his long-denied Oscar, and he passed away soon after, in 1984 at the age of 90!
