IRON MAN (character)
Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense, which had begun in 1959, when Marvel was Atlas Comics, and they had pre-hero monster stories, including ones by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. In March of 1963, Iron Man was introduced in issue #39, a normal man without super powers, but with an incredible metal suit (because he was super rich and could afford it), but he only had the lead story (by Jack Kirby), and the rest of the comic was still monster stories. In the first issue only, Iron Man had grey armor, but in the very next issue, #40, it was changed to golden armor, and in issue #48, the modern red and golden armor first appeared (drawn by Steve Ditko, possibly with help from Kirby). Beginning with issue #59 in November 1964, the comic was split between Iron Man and Captain America, who had guest starred in the Iron Man story in the previous issue, and the Captain America stories were drawn by Jack Kirby. With issue #100, Tales of Suspense was dropped, and the title changed to "Captain America", and Iron Man appeared in the one-shot Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1 in April 1968, and the following months, he was given his own title, and it was #1 in May 1968. Iron Man was one of the original members of the Avengers (beginning in September 1963) alongside Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and the Hulk. In 2008, the extremely successful Iron Man movie was made, starring Robert Downey Jr. in the role, and that has made Iron Man one of the most popular of the Marvel Comics heroes!
