An Original Vintage Fan Photo (5x7; measures 5" x 7"), with facsimile signature (Learn More) Richard Arlen was born Sylvanus Richard Van Mattimore in 1899 and was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps in World War I, but he never saw action. After the war, it took him several years to find himself, and he was discovered by Hollywood in the early 1920s, but it still took him several years of very minor roles (many uncredited) before he got his big break as one of the leads in "Wings" in 1927. He became a lead star, and had no trouble with the transition to sound, but his career went downhill in the late 1930s. He became deaf at the end of the 1940s, but an operation restored his hearing, and he continued in movies into the 1960s. He passed away in 1976 at the age of 76. Important Added Info: Note that this photo was sent by Hollywood studios to fans who sent letters to their favorite star. They would send a photo like this, printed on a nice paper stock with a facsimile autograph in a pre-printed envelope with the star's name and their studio as the return address, and there was a backing board within the envelope to protect the photo. This photo and envelope is one of a group of 25 photos and envelopes that were received by a specific fan who lived in Massachusetts in the 1920s, and who carefully saved them for many years! Each of the 25 are being sold in a separate auction. Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
