Auction History Result 2d012 GRAND HOTEL 17 German 8x10.75 stills '33 Greta Garbo, John & Lionel Barrymore, Joan Crawford Date Sold 8/29/2013 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 17 Original 1933 (from the first release of this movie in Germany) Vintage Theatrical German 8" x 10 3/4" [20 x 27 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More) Grand Hotel, the 1932 Edmund Goulding Berlin Germany all-star group-of-very-different-people-gather-at-the-world's-most-luxurious-hotel-and-have-romance-and-intrigue melodrama ("The greatest attraction in stage or screen history!"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore (in the memorable role of an ordinary man who learns he is dying, so he takes his life savings and spends a final holiday at the best hotel in the world!), Lewis Stone, Jean Hersholt, Ferdinand Gottschalk, Rafaela Ottiano, Frank Conroy, and Rafaela Ottiano NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that German stills from the 1930s closely resemble U.S. stills of the same time period, EXCEPT that they were almost all on a deluxe paper stock and almost all measured approximately 9" x 12" (rather than the U.S. size of 8" x 10"). One of the stills looks like a "title card", because it has the title and full credits on it, and may well be exactly the same as one of the original German posters (it has a vertical format). These stills were all trimmed to 8" x 10 3/4" [20 x 27 cm], which on some of them affects the studio logo or small writing on the bottom. Also included with the 17 stills are two pages from the May 28, 1932 issue of Picturegoer Weekly, the English magazine, which has a 2-page spread about Grand Hotel, and also a trimmed 8" x 10" 1933 calendar, which has an image of Grand Hotel above the dates. Condition: good. All the stills were trimmed to 8" x 10 3/4" . Some have a faint embossed foreign stamp. Other than these two defects, the stills are in pretty nice condition, especially considering their age! Learn More about condition grades
