An Original Vintage Theatrical German Movie Campaign Book (measures 9 1/2" x 12 3/4" [24 x 32 cm]; 20 pages) (Learn More)

Warner Bros 1950-51, the German campaign book, created by Warner Bros. in 1950 to promote their upcoming releases in Germany. The book includes 20 pages with one and two-page spreads on Warner Bros.' upcoming movies and stars! Here is a complete list of the movies advertised: The Adventures of Don Juan, Young Man with a Horn, The Time, the Place, and the Girl, City for Conquest, Dark Passage, Stage Fright, Montana, Chain Lightning, Romance on the High Seas, The Flame and the Arrow, The Girl from Jones Beach, Virginia City, The Prince and the Pauper, My Dream is Yours, and The Charge of the Light Brigade. Note that many of these movies were from earlier years, because of course, World War II had intervened, but in addition, Warner Bros stopped distributing their movies to Germany in 1936, after one of their executives was murdered by the Nazis, so it was not until after the war that all of the 1937 to 1945 Warner Bros movies could be distributed there, and this was done over a period of around 7 or 8 years, so there would not be so many movies released each year. Because of this, many great Warner Bros. movies are included, and this book has many wonderful artwork ads for great movies that include great stars like Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Doris Day, and the other stars of the above movies. We have included images of the cover of the book and several of the interior pages (and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones, and we really wish we could have pictured them all!). Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived (and German editions of campaign books are incredibly rare!). I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that some of the movies listed in this book may never have been made at all, and some had their titles changed, and some had their cast or director changed! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German campaign book, and we have never seen a U.S. campaign book from this of it either! Not only that, but Warner Bros. was notorious for not making campaign books like the other studios did (they made them in the early 1920s, but stopped after 1926-27, perhaps as a way of economizing), so ANY Warner Bros. campaign books are incredibly rare!

Condition: very good. There are flaps on the back cover that indicate some kind of supplement was included under the flaps, but whatever was once there is not present. The interior pages have separated from the covers and there is pretty minor wear around the edges. Otherwise, the book is in pretty nice condition!
