Date Sold 6/2/2011 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 17 Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" Movie Stills (Learn More) The Bridge on the River Kwai, the classic 1958 David Lean (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English/U.S. World War II (WWII) military Japanese prison camp sabotage thriller ("Decades from now, motion pictures will proudly claim to be 'In the great tradition of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'"; "A masterpiece of filmcraft that you will want to see again and again!"; "Screenplay by Pierre Boulle Based on His Novel"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring William Holden, Alec Guinness (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Jack Hawkins, Sessue Hayakawa (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; but should have WON the Academy Award), James Donald, Ann Sears, and Geoffrey Horne (billed as "introducing Geoffrey Horne"). Note that this film premiered in England in October of 1957, and had a very limited release in the U.S. in December (to qualify for the Academy Awards), but the U.S. wide-release took place in 1958. Also, note that Pierre Boulle is credited as the screenwriter and won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay despite his lack of involvement in the movie itself (he wrote the novel the movie is based on). The actual screenwriters were Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, but they were blacklisted and ineligible for screen credit. In 1984, the Academy retroactively awarded the Oscar to Wilson and Foreman. Note that on our larger lots of black and white stills (mostly the ones with nine or more in the lot), there are a small number of lots where there may be one or several duplicated stills in the stills not pictured (we only picture four of the stills on all of the black and white lots). Sometimes we noted when some of the stills not pictured were duplicates to the ones that were pictured, but we likely did not catch that on many of the lots (especially the ones with a large number of stills), so please do not bid on the lots of nine or more stills unless you can accept the possibility that there may be some duplicated stills contained in the lot.
