A Linenbacked German Special Poster (measures 38 3/4" x 57 1/4" [98 x 145 cm]) (Learn More) Munchener Herz Und Schwabinger Luft (literally translates to "Munich Heart and Schwabinger Air"), the 1938 German poster promoting a masquerade ball festival which was produced by the Munich Art Colleges, and held on January 29th at the Deutsches Theater in Munich, Germany. Note that this poster features Olaf Gulbransson artwork of a sexy woman embracing a masked man with the silhouette of the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady in the background. Munich (the Bavarian capital) used to be a carnival stronghold from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century (until well into the 1930s), and it is in fact alive and kicking today. In 1914 alone, there were 533 masked balls and 145 black and white balls. This phenomenon of decadent hustle and bustle was created in particular by the artists of the Schwabinger Boheme, at first in the form of wild studio festivals, but increasingly also by artists' balls. Olaf Gulbransson was an illustrator identified with the German satirists of the early 20th century, and noted for portrait caricature. He is also important as one of the first satirists of Adolf Hitler. Gulbransson studied at the Royal Norwegian Drawing School and worked for several Norwegian newspapers. After a visit to Paris in 1900, he returned to Oslo, where he distributed his first album consisting of caricatures of famous Norwegians. In 1902 he moved to Munich and began his long association with Simplicissimus, a leading publication in the fertile artistic and intellectual climate of the time. There he became famous for his gently satiric caricatures executed in a sure, bold style with a minimum number of lines. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Olaf Gulbransson Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German stage play poster! Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had darkening in the right blank border, where there was once a thin strip of tape on the reverse. It also had a few small tears in that area. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
