An Original Vintage Linenbacked Cricus Poster (measures 21" x 28") (Learn More) Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus, the 1942 circus poster ("Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Gargantua the Great") featuring a great image of the number one attraction at the circus that year, two enormous gorillas! Note that the poster is dated 1942 in the bottom left and that it reads "Copyright 1942 Ringling Bros And Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows Inc.". The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. The poster had some light slightly diagonal creases in the middle. There were three pieces of tape on the back of the top border, mending tears. There was paper residue across the bottom border, from where a snipe with showtimes was attached. There were a few creases and smudges scattered through the poster. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed on to a very thin linen, with no excess, and it is likely the poster has picked up additional creases since it has been backed. If I owned this great poster, I would have it removed from the old thin linen and properly re-backed, after which it would look sensational, and it would require very little paint restoration.
