An Unfolded German Art Exhibition Poster (measures 17 1/4" x 23 1/4" [44 x 59 cm]) (Learn More)

Kunst-Ausstellung (literally translates to "Art Exhibition"), the 1897 German poster promoting an exhibition of art to be held at the newly opened Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld, Germany. Note that this poster features Alfred Mohrbutter art of a timelessly beautiful woman holding a paintbrush. Mohrbutter was a German painter, lithographer, producer of etchings, teacher and applied artist. As an activist in the Victorian Dress Reform Movement (a social movement in late 19th-century and early 20th-century), his artwork sometimes featured women in "reform dresses", which were far more practical and comfortable than other garments of the time. Dress reformists were largely middle class women involved in the first wave of feminism in the United States and in Britain, from the 1850s through the 1890s. Mohrbutter published a book on reform garments and fashion, and this poster art clearly shows one of those loose and comfortable dresses (a move away from the stranglehold of the Belle Epoque fashions featuring bustles, corsets and hobble-skirts). The poster is also influenced by the Vienna Secession Movement, which was an art movement formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists.
