A Linenbacked Belgian Special Poster (measures 23" x 63 1/4" [58 x 161 cm]) (Learn More)

Ath Fetes Communales 1903 (literally translates to "Ath Communal Celebrations 1903"), the 1903 Belgian poster promoting a firefighting event which took place in Ath, Belgium in August. The celebration included multiple firefighting organizations, demonstrations of firefighting equipment, and something called "Tir a la Cible Chinoise" (Chinese Target Shooting, which apparently involved shooting at a firecracker in an attempt to set it off). Note that this poster features Roup artwork of a firefighter saving a young girl.
Artist: L. Roup
Important Added Info: Note that we would think this is surely an incomplete poster, and perhaps a test poster. We are currently auctioning a full-color Belgian poster from this same event, and that poster has this image on the left, and is almost exactly double the size of this poster. We can't say what this was created for, but it would seem to surely be from 1903, as the full-color one is. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept the uncertainties about how and why it was created. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a series of light stains down the left border, extending into the image background. It had an uneven vertical fold at a slight diagonal near the center, and paper loss in the top left blank corner. We think the poster is incomplete (see above), but not knowing that for certain makes it difficult to assign a condition grade. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
