Note that the original source novel (which was based on a real case in then modern day Georgia) involved a black man whose white wife was lynched and he sought revenge. Apparently, this was too controversial for Hollywood, and the story was shifted in time and place to Oklahoma in the Old West, and the lead character became a "half-breed" Native American!
