An Original Vintage Linenbacked German Personality Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 33" [59 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

Greta Garbo was a legendary romantic Swedish actress from the 1924 to 1941 (she retired at the age of 35, still extremely popular, and lived in seclusion for many decades afterwards, living by her trademark expression, "I want to be alone"). Almost all other major leading ladies of the mid 1920s had their careers diminished or ruined by the coming of sound, but not Garbo, all the more remarkable because she was not native English-speaking and she had a strong accent. She first rose to prominence in a movie in her native Sweden, and then attracted the interest of Hollywood, but she would only sign a contract if they would sign her director as well, and MGM agreed! Some of her movies include: Ninotchka (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Queen Christina, Grand Hotel, Anna Christie (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Romance (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Camille (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film). Garbo passed away in 1990 at the age of 84.
Artist: Kurt Glombig
Important Added Info: Note that this is a special German personality poster of Greta Garbo, featuring great art of Miss Garbo by Kurt Glombig, created by MGM in the late 1940s for use in German movie theaters that were showing Greta Garbo movies. After the end of World War II, there were lots of U.S. servicemen stationed in Germany and Japan, and LOTS of American movies were shown in those countries, both to U.S. servicemen, and the local populations. The distributor of this poster, the "Motion Picture Export Association", is the same company that distributed American movies to Japan and a few other countries in the late 1940s. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded in the regular way, but it was folded horizontally 3" from the top border. It was mounted on a thin linen, and it now has a number of defects, and surely many of them occurred after the poster was backed, because the backed poster was roughly handled, but there is no way to differentiate when they occurred, so I will just describe the defects the poster now has. It has some creases and scuffs scattered within the image, but fortunately few in Garbo's face. It has a 3" crease or tear near the middle of the left border, with creases and scuffs above that. It has creases and scuffs around the edges. If I owned this poster, I would have it removed from the thin linen and properly re-backed and restored, after which it would look great. But please bear in mind its defects and look at our super-sized image before bidding on it.
