Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this style B half-sheet, two 11 years ago, when they sold for $17,100 (in "good" paperbacked condition, because of fading) and $20,777 (in "good to very good" unbacked condition), and one in 2019, when it sold for $17,100 (in "very good" gelbacked condition)! The person who purchased the one for $20,777 had it gelbacked expertly, and has now reconsigned it to us, so it is still only one of three examples of this poster we have ever auctioned.

Note that this style B half-sheet from "War of the Worlds" is a legendary poster, and rightfully so! Whereas almost every other poster from the ad campaign has the "giant alien hand", this poster alone has the great "warships attacking" image, and every horror/sci-fi collector wants to have it in their collection, but because it is incredibly rare, very few do have it, and the few that have surfaced have sold for extremely high prices (see the prices we realized above for examples in lesser condition).

Note that this poster has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the poster onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the poster no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with posters that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the posters it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration!

What IS gelbacking? Learn More

Condition: very good. The poster had pieces of tape and tape stains around the edges, in the blank borders only. It had a 2 1/2" tear in the lower part of the left border that extended into the red background. There was some surface paper loss in the blank borders where tape was roughly removed. There were some pieces of tape on the back of the borders. The poster was folded once in each direction and was lightly partially folded an extra time, resulting in two partial extra vertical foldlines. There was darkening on the extreme outer edge of the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to restoration, because the majority of the defects were in the blank borders. A talented restorer gel backed the poster and performed excellent restoration to the above defects. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the poster displays really well!
